So... What's All This?
The short version: When we were a child, we underwent a lot of trauma that caused our brain to react in an odd way and split different "personalities" to contain different memories and trauma. Over time, we kept splitting more people to contain more memories, and just because we needed more internal support. Technically, these "personalities" are called "alters", but we prefer the term headmates! We're different people, with different emotions, likes, dislikes, and personalities of our own, but we share a body. We can take over and use the body (called fronting) and we have a headspace we live in, commonly called the innerworld. We're happy to answer questions!The longer version: Do a few hours worth of research on DID, Dissociative Identity Disorder.

What's Dissociation?
To put it simply, dissociation is a disconnect between the mind and the surroundings. Often times for us, it feels like we're not connected to our body or connected to the outside world at all, and it can be very unsettling and uncomfortable. This also sometimes comes along with derealization, or the experience of feeling like the world around you isn't real.
(Personal) Causes of Dissociation
We dissociate during switches (different alters taking control of main front), from zoning out (which on occasion can cause accidental switches), from remembering traumatic memories, anxiety or panic attacks, understimulation, overstimulation, and several more reasons. We may seem "out of it", or just like we aren't thinking straight. It's best to have patience or interact with caution in times like these.
